Mohamed Salah: One Game Away from Premier League History

Liverpool’s Egyptian king, Mohamed Salah, is on the verge of rewriting Premier League history โ€” but time is running out.

In what has already been a phenomenal individual campaign, Salah is just one goal contribution shy of equaling the all-time Premier League record of 47 goal involvements in a single season, currently shared by legends Alan Shearer and Andrew Cole.

Yet, in his milestone 400th appearance for Liverpool, the opportunity to match the record was painfully missed. Salah somehow side-footed wide a golden chance created by Cody Gakpo, leaving fans and even Salah himself in disbelief.

From Unstoppable to Stalled?

Earlier in the season, Salah looked destined to smash all records. By March 8th, he had notched 27 goals and 17 assists in 29 matches, blazing past Erling Haaland’s 44 contributions in a 38-game season and matching Thierry Henryโ€™s legendary 20-assist record.

But since that match against Southampton, he has recorded only one goal and one assist across eight league games. The dip in form, although slight, has left him one assist short of setting a new all-time record and one goal contribution away from etching his name alongside Premier League greats.

Arne Slot: “Mo is still magic”

Despite the recent dry spell, Liverpool manager Arne Slot remains confident:

“He’s been almost inhuman this season. If he misses once or twice, you can count on him to deliver in the next.”

Slot’s faith is grounded in Salahโ€™s incredible consistency. With 28 league goals, Salah has already secured the Premier League Golden Boot for the fourth time, matching Henryโ€™s record tally for Arsenal.

A Shot at European Glory Too?

Salah is also a contender for the European Golden Shoe. Currently, Viktor Gyรถkeres of Sporting CP leads with 39 goals, but thanks to UEFAโ€™s points-based system โ€” which weighs goals scored in tougher leagues more heavily โ€” Salah could overtake him with just two more goals in Liverpoolโ€™s final match against Crystal Palace.

With Kylian Mbappรฉ (29 goals) also in the race, the finale promises drama not just in England but across Europe.

The Numbers Speak for Themselves

Since his ยฃ34 million move from Roma in 2017, Salah has delivered a remarkable 354 goal contributions in 400 games for Liverpool โ€” 244 goals and 110 assists. His influence is unmatched in modern-day Premier League football.

To put things in perspective:

  • Salah has already set the record for goal involvements in a 38-game season.

  • Only Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Suarez, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic have managed 50+ goal contributions in a single league season in Europeโ€™s top five leagues.

  • Salah has scored and assisted in the same game 49 times โ€” only behind Messi (102) and Ronaldo (65) since 2006-07.

All Eyes on Anfield

With one game left in the campaign, all eyes will be on Anfield this weekend. Will Salah finally surpass the record and cement his place in football folklore? Or will his remarkable season end just shy of historic perfection?

Either way, Salah has proven once again why he is one of the greatest players to grace the Premier League.
