Another Heatwave Looms Over Pakistan: PMD Issues Fresh Advisory

Severe Heatwave Expected from May 20 to May 24

As temperatures continue to soar, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a fresh advisory warning of another intense heatwave expected to hit various parts of the country from May 20 to May 24, 2025. This follows a similar alert issued earlier on May 15.

What’s Fueling the Heatwave?

According to the PMD, a high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere is expected to persist during the current week. This system is pushing daytime temperatures to rise significantly—by as much as 4 to 7 degrees Celsius above normal.

A shallow trough of a westerly wave is also influencing the upper regions of the country. The impact of this weather system is expected to last for the next four days.

Areas Most Affected

Southern Pakistan

Sindh, Southern Punjab, and Balochistan are likely to experience daytime temperatures 4 to 6°C above normal.

Northern and Central Pakistan

Central and Upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Azad Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan can expect even more extreme conditions, with temperatures projected to be 5 to 7°C above average.

Twin Cities Update

In Rawalpindi and Islamabad, temperatures reached 39°C on Monday. The mercury is expected to climb further to 41–42°C over the coming days.

Extreme Temperatures Recorded

Dadu and Jacobabad recorded the highest temperatures in the country on Monday, with a scorching 48°C.

Precautionary Measures for the Public

The PMD has urged citizens to take the following precautions to stay safe during the heatwave:

Avoid direct exposure to sunlight between 11 AM and 4 PM
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water
Wear light, breathable clothing
Minimize outdoor activity during peak heat hours

Health and Safety Alert

The combination of excessive heat and dry conditions may also lead to dust storms and gusty winds, particularly in plain areas.

Advice for Farmers and Authorities

Farmers are advised to carefully manage crop-related activities and ensure proper care for their livestock.
Authorities have been urged to remain vigilant and prepare for potential emergencies that may arise due to extreme heat.
In northern areas, increased temperatures may accelerate the melting of glaciers, posing additional challenges related to water flow and potential flash floods.
